Award-winning regional Virginia artist.
Donna Nevers is a native of Waynesboro, Virginia and since 1995 a full time resident of Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. Donna is a working archaeologist who has traveled and studied art for over 30 years. Some of her favorite subjects incorporate archaeology and art in mixed media. Her works reflect her passion for her native Virginia landscape and the countries she has visited. She prefers heavy texture and uses palette knife impasto or energetic brushwork to relay her messages to the viewer. Her fresh and lush color palette along with diverse textures emit emotion and an imagination that provides a challenge to the viewer to decide for themselves the meaning held within each painting.
She has studied with numerous international teaching professionals. Her favorite studies abroad have been in London, France, Italy, and Spain where her museum art research and visits provide renewed inspiration and a refreshed sense of culture and style. In 2014 Donna will paint in Southern France where she has an artist-in-residency and another Art Show. For this fourth trip to France she will take along a small group of artists who wish to explore and paint in the picturesque town of Soreze, France.
Nevers' works are included in both private and corporate collections throughout the United States and abroad. Her past awards are numerous; but most recently Nevers received distinguished awards at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Roanoke League of Arts, New River Fine Arts Center, Virginia Watercolor Society, Blacksburg Arts Association, Bath County Art Show, Central Virginia Watercolor Show, WVTF Public Radio Galleries, Roanoke College, Hollins University, Smith Mountain Lake Arts Council, and Westlake Annual Juried Art Shows.
Nevers believes in life-long learning. While she has studied art for 30 years, she also has degrees in Nursing and Archaeology. Therefore, it is no surprise that in 2008 she received her Master's in Fine Arts from Hollins University. Since 2007 she has taught collage design and techniques at youth summer camps and for area fine art groups. She has served as Volunteer Curator for the Westlake Library Gallery and Chairman of their annual juried art shows for the past seven years. Her goal there is to curate monthly shows of quality art by area artists and to provide the public with different media concepts so that they might have the opportunity to gain knowledge and have a fuller appreciation of art.
Presently she exhibits at galleries in Georgia, South Carolina, Richmond, Virginia and Saussignac, France. Donna is an officer of the Virginia Watercolor Society. She is a member of Central Virginia Watercolor Guild, SML Artists on the Loose, Blacksburg Regional Art Association, Virginia Collage Society and The National Collage Society. She is an Associate member of the National Watercolor Society. In 2012 and 2013 she exhibited in Richmond, VA at the Uptown Gallery and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Studios. She also participated in the 100th anniversary show of mixed media art with the Virginia Collage Society.
Nevers teaches mixed media and encaustic wax workshops at Studio School Roanoke, Bower Center for the Arts, Bedford, for Virginia Collage Society in Richmond, VA. and in Lynchburg.
